Music Ministry
"Music is a fair and glorious gift of God." – Martin Luther
Adult Choir
The Adult Choir has contributed to Sunday morning worship and other special services for many years. Comprised of volunteers whose love of music inspires their participation, this group provides music for worship including, but not limited to, new hymns, anthems appropriate to the theme and season of the church year, and liturgical additions. All singers of high school age and above are welcome to join our Adult Choir.
Adult Choir participates in worship a minimum of twice per month and rehearses on Thursdays at 7:00 pm, beginning after Labor Day and continuing into June.
School Choirs
Our Junior Choir (grades 2-4) and Upper Grade Choir (grades 5-8) consist of students enrolled in St. Paul Lutheran School and rehearse once a week during the school year. Both School choirs participate in occasional worship services, school chapel services, and special occasions.
Praise Team
"Sing to the Lord a new song" - the Psalms
St. Paul's Praise Team has contributed to our Saturday evening worship over the past two decades, and is comprised of volunteers who love contemporary and Gospel music. The Praise Team's repertoire consists of over 100 songs of contemporary and Gospel styles, of which 5 or 6 are selected for a Saturday service. Our song list is updated and enhanced as we introduce new songs for worship.
Singers and instrumentalists of high school age and above are welcome to join our Praise Team. Instruments such as keyboard, guitar, bass guitar, drums, and percussion are used regularly in worship, and orchestral instruments are welcome also.
The Praise Team rehearses once a month, generally on the first Wednesday of the month. Please contact Jeff Kiel, our Praise Team Director, for exact rehearsal information.
Instruments
Orchestral and band instruments are encouraged to participate in regular and special worship services. Brass combo and Flute Choir are among the opportunities we provide to instrumentalists. Please contact Jeff Kiel for more information.
Soloists
Vocal soloists are welcome to participate in regular and special worship services. Membership in our Adult Choir is not required for soloists. Please contact Jeff Kiel for more information.
Meet our Music Director
Jeff Kiel grew up in the Chicago South Side's former steel district and began his musical training at age 7. Upon seeing and hearing the church organist at Bethlehem Lutheran in Chicago making practical use of his talents, Jeff asked his parents about taking organ lessons and continued this pursuit throughout his school years. Organ lessons from private instructors later turned toward piano instruction in classical and improvisational style.
Jeff formally studied music at Concordia University Chicago under the training of Paul Bunjes, Carl Schalk, Victor Hildner, and Robert Busse. He began his musical vocation in 1980 and has since kept active with church music serving as organist and choir director for various congregations. In 2003 he accepted the position of Director of Praise Music at St. John Lutheran in Forest Park, beginning his full-time music career. Jeff joined the ministry of St. Paul in 2007 and enjoys being here where he can make use of his diverse musical abilities to the glory of God.
